17. Make Recognition Memorable

As a young finance manager, I supported Margaret Dano, a global operations and supply chain executive. She was the master of impossible challenges, and yet when those lofty goals were met, our next leadership offsite was held at a great location with the perfect combination of work and play. I was most touched, though, by the cards I would find on my desk after a sprint of above-and-beyond effort: Margaret would place a greeting card with a personal note and a crisp $50 or $100 bill, encouraging a little celebration like a happy hour or dinner date on her. This personal touch and splash of unexpected generosity have never been forgotten. I enjoy repeating this practice regularly.
